What are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are transparent, removable alignment devices that used to straighten your teeth. They are alternative to traditional braces but more convenient as they are removable and help you achieve straight teeth discreetly.

How do I kickstart my clear aligner journey?

  1. Arrange an appointment for consultation and 3D intraoral scan
    Dentist will conduct a full examination and assessment with photos, x-rays and 3D intraoral scan for analysis of facial profile, malocclusion and dental condition. These records will be used to make a 3D treatment plan, which will be used to design the custom made Invisalign aligners.
  2. Making a personalised Treatment Plan
    Dentist will show you a 3D simulated outcome of the treatment to show you your predicted results during and after your clear aligner treatment.
  3. Your journey starts!
    You will be given a series of trays, each of which lasts a week or two, and are to be worn for 22-24 hours a day.
    These trays gradually move the teeth, and should only be removed while eating and drinking.
    in some cases, if deemed necessary, your doctor may also fit clear attachments on your teeth to join with aligners, also providing more support to move your teeth into the desired position.
    You will likely schedule face-to-face consultation every 6-8 weeks to check your progress and pick up the next batch of aligners.

What happens when I’m done with clear aligner treatment?

It is recommended that anyone who has completed orthodontic treatment, use a retainer to prevent teeth from gradually shifting back toward their initial position. Every case is different, so ask your doctor if you need retainers.

Do I need to wear my aligners all day?

You should wear each aligner for 20 to 22 hours a day during your treatment for best results and a timely outcome.

How often do I need to see my doctor during clear aligner treatment?

You will visit your dentist for a check-up approximately every 6-8 weeks to see how your treatment is progressing. During your check-ups, your dentist will check that the aligners are fitting well and make any adjustments if necessary.

Can I get all my aligners at once?

You’ll be provided with enough aligners to last between visits to your doctor (usually 3-4 sets at a time). Your doctor will review your progress every 6-8 weeks and new aligners will be given to you at these appointments. It’s best to speak to your doctor about how many aligners you will be provided with between visits.

Are there restrictions on what I can eat while on treatment?

No, you can usually eat what you want while in treatment because the clear aligners are removed when eating or drinking. Thus, there’s no need to refrain from your favourite foods and drinks unless instructed by your doctor. However, it’s recommended that you floss and brush your teeth after each meal and prior to re-inserting your aligners to maintain proper oral hygiene.

Can the aligners slip off while I'm sleeping?

It’s very unlikely that your aligners will ever fall out, no matter what you’re doing at the time (whether it’s sleeping, talking or laughing). Clear aligners are designed to fit firmly on the teeth so this should not be a cause for concern.

Will wearing the clear aligners affect my speech?

Similar to other orthodontic treatments, the clear aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people for a day or two. However, as your tongue gets used to having aligners in your mouth, any misarticulation or minor speech impediment caused by the aligners should disappear.

Can I wear aligners if I'm pregnant?

The aligners are made of non-toxic, medical-grade plastic and can be worn during pregnancy. If you’re concerned, please consult your healthcare professional.

Is aligner treatment painful?

some people might experience temporary, mild discomfort for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. This is commonly described as a feeling of pressure. It's a sign that the aligners are sequentially moving your teeth to their desired positions. This discomfort usually goes away a couple of days after you insert the new aligner in the series.
